The Story of IKEA

A group on a guided tour at IKEA Museum.

The exhibition is being rebuilt. Furniture and room settings are therefore not available in the exhibition.

One of our knowledgeable, experienced guides takes you through the story that has shaped IKEA.

Our journey together often begins long before Ingvar Kamprad played shops as a young boy in the small village of Agunnaryd in Småland. You might like to see what it was like to churn butter in the old farming community or use a lever to dig up a boulder from the stark Småland soil.

The guide will take you through the four parts of the main exhibition: Our Roots, IKEA Through the Ages, The Many Sides of Ingvar Kamprad, and Democratic Design. Using stories and historical objects, you can see how modern Sweden emerged and awakened new ideas about a better life at home for more people. See how life at home has changed over the decades as you step inside rooms that were typical of their time, from the 1940s to the present day.

The exhibition shows how thrifty Småland creativity, Swedish modernism and Ingvar Kamprad’s entrepreneurialism formed the embryo of IKEA, which grew into a global brand. In the Democratic Design section, the guide talks about the process and mindset behind the work to create a better everyday life for the many people.
